To help children's future: invest in grandparents

In Tanzania’s Muheza district, vulnerable older people and the orphans in their care are being given mosquito nets and advice on how to control malaria. The orphans are also being given essential school equipment.

Grandfather Bakari is delighted with the support he is getting from this project. He has seven grandchildren: four girls and three boys. Four grandchildren are at school, another cannot go because Baraki cannot afford all the required school contributions. The other two are still too young.

This project has already helped 61 orpphaned grandchildren by paying for their school uniforms. It has also provided them with school bags, mathematical sets, ruler, pen and exercise books.

Baraki and his family have already received mosquito nets and vital identity cards which allow them to access free medical services. Thanks to this project, more than 1,700 nets have been distributed to older people and their families. They have also had training sessions on the proper use of insecticide treated nets, and the importance of keeping areas around their homes clean to reduce mosquito infestation.

In the six months since he received the mosquito nets, Baraki says none of his family has been bitten. Previously, every two months or so, one of them had to attend hospital due to malaria. “We thank you very much as our health has improved due to free access to medical services and we don’t pay any more for the services,” says Bakari.
