Global Giving – Tanzania Update – August 2009
Working in collaboration with our local partner, we have provided identity cards to 4,200 older people in Karagwe. They can now access free medical services under the national health insurance scheme.
We have also organised training sessions in local communities so that older people are made aware of their rights and the benefits to which they are entitled. 73 year old Alfred says ‘It is my sincere hope that [these] meetings will help me to understand and access entitlements that are enshrined in government policies and this will make my life and family more stable.’
Over the next six months, we will be buying and distributing school uniforms to vulnerable and orphaned children care for by their grandparents. Although education is free, the cost alone of a uniform can prevent some children from going to school. But we are hoping to change that in Karagwe. This will have enormous benefits for the children, their families and their communities. With better education, they are likely to have better employment opportunities in future, thus being able to support their grandparents and their own families in later life.
Over the next six months, we also aim to buy and distribute 850 mosquito nets in Muheza. This is particularly important since 33% of all deaths in the region are caused by malaria. Look out for the next update to find out how these mosquito nets have made a difference to the lives of people in Muheza.
