The Invest in Grandparents project has been busy providing identity cards for over 2,000 poor and disadvantaged older people in Karagwe, Tanzania. Until now, many older people have been charged fees at health centres simply because they could not prove their age. This made healthcare unaffordable for older people already struggling to support their grandchildren. Alongside the identity cards, we have been working with local older people’s groups to raise awareness about their entitlement to free health care for over 60s.
Francis, 69, cares for two of his grandchildren, aged 5 and 6. He suffers from dental and joint problems. Recently his health problems prevented him from working his quarter acre plot to grow food to feed his family. He says, “If I can get treatment [with the identity card], I will be able at least to work in my farm and resume other life activities”.
With your support, the next step will be to help older people to send their grandchildren to school, by providing help with uniforms and books. Please help us with a donation today.
