In rural comunities, leadership is more than a skill, it is a tool to transform the reality from within. That is why in our education program we take our time to encourage our students to be the next leaders of their community and we challenged them to move from being observers to be leaders. We designed a workshop where the students aquired new skills to solve real problems of their environment. This time the students were split into three groups to come up with different solutions to solve a local polution problems, specifically all trash in the streets of their community.
Among the different solutions, group 1 said that the first thing to do is to remind people their responsibility of keeping the streets clean. They suggested that this can be done by choosing a series of cleaning days.
Group 2 proposal was very interesting. They suggested to talk with the leaders of each church in ChukMuk and include them in the cleaning days.They also said that these are the places where most of the poeple of their community meet every Sunday.
Group 3 noticed that a large proportion of the trash was single use plastic bags that are used for safe, clean water by those without a water filter. They thought a long term solution would be helping families get water filters.
In all three groups the students learned how to work as a group to find a soution and then present this solution to the rest of the participants.
