.We believe that there are many components to a successful education. For this reason we have helped build the school library collection as well as introduced CHESS into the elementary classroom at Chuk Muk. To make this possible we visited numerous thrift stores in Canada to find second hand chess sets.
We has a lot of fun explaining the game of chess to the students and we were impressed with how quickly they picked it up.
Chess is important because it improves mental prowess, helps develop thinking skills and has been shown to directly contibute to acedemic performance. Learning to play chess improves the ability to think rationally and while the students are learning thoughtfulness and patience, they are having a great time.
Every January is very exciting at Aldea Maya as it is the start of the new school year. Our school sponsorship program is working as we help the poorest families keep their children in school. Here are some pictures of our sponsor students receiving supplies, back pack, school uniforms and shoes. We are also meeting with all the sponsored students as they start the school year. We want to know what courses they are struggling in before the problem grows. Then we set up an individual tutoring plan to assist them. Our university students are great role models and tutors.
