Project Title:          PAKISTAN COVID AFFECTEES NEED HELP (#51743)

Background of the situation related to COVID-19

The COVID-19 is far more than a global health crisis which has affected countries and economies at their core and has wreaked havoc not just on health but on the livelihoods of many while claiming lives, multiplying the human sufferings and upending the societies. Like global economy, Pakistan’s fragile economy is also being affected by COVID-19 which is projected to face a loss of up to 4% of its GDP due to disruption in trade, potential decline in foreign direct investment (FDI) and remittances, and influxes in other sector such as aviation, tourism and hospitality, caused by the lockdown imposed in the country.[1]

The COVID-19 Third Wave and subsequently prolonged lockdown has not only further impacted the economy in general, but it has also damaged small and medium businesses in Pakistan. The middle and lower income groups struggled to earn enough income to pay for basic necessities. It has resulted in hyperinflation, joblessness and complete collapse of the economy. Government of Pakistan and many humanitarian organizations came upfront and started supporting needy families through food and cash distributions. Unfortunately, even during a global pandemic, discrimination on the basis of religion continued in Pakistan and Christian minority community was excluded from the support schemes of the Government who are mainly daily wagers, sanitary and domestic workers and belong to other low income groups in general. Consequently, this health and socio-economic crisis lead to extreme poverty and it turned into a worst-case scenario at local levels for the Christian minority community as the country remained in lockdowns for a couple of months.

During the COVID-19 Third Wave, Pak Mission Society (PMS) supported 30 poor and unreached families of Rawalpindi and Islamabad through disbursement of cheques amounting to PKR 7,000 per family while STANDING NEXT TO THOSE STAND ALONE. This support of Pak Mission Society (PMS) has immediately impacted on the deserving beneficiaries in the following three areas:

  • Beneficiaries did not take debt for food during lockdown
  • They had food security for one month
  • Sense of relief for a shorter period of time

Pak Mission Society (PMS) thanked GlobalGiving and requested to explore further donors so that PMS expand its support to more deserving people.
