Children sharing their craft ideas
A typical day at SAMADHAN starts with the arrival of children for special education and pre-vocational training. Some squealing with excitement, some crying loudly as their sweet dreams had been cut short and some are busy helping their classmates carry their school bags to the rooms. At 10 am the class assembles for prayer and morning exercises while the mothers who accompany their children for therapy sessions engage in chit-chat… SAMADHAN was vibrant with enhanced therapy sessions to buzzling classroom activities until everything suddenly came to a stand-still. The unprecedented pandemic turned lives upside down and for families of children, clustered in their single room dwellings, the scenario was all the more devastating. Exasperated mothers struggled to balance their domestic chores and manage children throwing tantrums, and there was utter confusion and uncertainty in the minds of the parents. Given this circumstance, we reached out to the parents during the lockdown period through simple ‘Teach-At-Home’ WhatsApp videos and messages using available technology. All the parents/caregivers were able to 'contact' their child’s respective teachers and therapists. We are regularly conducting remote counselling sessions for the families on the management of children during this stressful period, as per requirement.
With the support from donors, SAMADHAN has successfully enrolled 30 children under the Niramaya Health Scheme of the National Trust, a statutory body of the Government of India. The scheme benefits the children by providing a health insurance cover up to INR 1 lakh.
In order to ensure that the children are getting a nutritional boost, we distributed high protein nutritional supplement, ‘NutriMix’, using 100% pure and traditional ingredients made by the mothers at SAMADHAN. We are also very happy to share that six children got admission in local government and private schools under the disability category. SAMADHAN continues to provide online support to mothers and family members in special education, counselling and home interventions.
We walked through troubled times last year and hope the situation improves in this new year. We thank our supporters for being with us thus far and looking forward to your continued support.
