Our world is being disrupted by new technologies across every industry. Imagine in this context, what it must mean for a young person who has never used a computer- the likelihood of finding work? At Afrika Tikkun we are preparing disadvantaged youth in South Africa to become computer literate and competitive in the global world.
Meet 11 years old Busisiwe, who has been attending Afrika Tikkun’s center in Alexandra township (low-income community) since she was 5 years old. Busisiwe has six siblings and she is the youngest in the family. She and her siblings live with their grandmother who bakes cakes and scones to support the family.
Busisiwe is enrolled in our Child and Youth Development (CYD) Program, that seeks to enhance the capabilities of young people, between 7 and 18 years of age, to participate in the socio-economic development of South Africa as well as to build social capital and the capabilities of young people to become active citizens. As part of our program, Busisiwe was able to access computer, learn valuable computer skills and use internet to research for school projects. Access to the computer and internet has also helped her to research about female health and hygiene. Not only has the computer and internet at the Center provided her with the opportunity to improve her academic results, but it has also ensured her health and safety by providing her with information that's not readily available. She does not have a computer or internet access at home. However, through our Program, disadvantaged kids like Busisiwe have access to latest technology and resources that enables them to improve their academic outcome and enhance their skills set. In 2016, 5,000 young people benefitted from the services provided by our CYD Program.
