Afrika Tikkun believes that today’s young people are tomorrow’s leaders and that every young person deserves the opportunity to be the best that they can be. For the last 23 years, Afrika Tikkun has invested in the development of young people, from cradle to career by providing a holistic set of educational, health, and social services designed to propel them into success. Afrika Tikkun believes that a comprehensive approach towards development is the most effective way to sustainably break the cycle of poverty for the current and future generations.
The disadvantaged youth we serve in the five township communities of South Africa are working hard to become future leaders, by overcoming the various social and economic challenges they face in their communities. One example is of Morongwa, an 18-year-old girl who is aspiring to become the next Executive Director of UN Women, just like Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka.
Morongwa is an ambitious girl who was raised by her single mother. Growing up in the Diepsloot township of South Africa, Morongwa endured incredible hardships. She first learned about Afrika Tikkun in Grade 10 and believes that Afrika Tikkun has changed her life. Now, she is studying hard to achieve her professional and academic goals and wants to become a social activist and a human rights advocate. She is actively participating in Afrika Tikkun’s Young Urban Women Project-- a leadership and self-led human rights advocacy program of our organization. In 2014, Morongwa earned a certificate for being an overall achiever. She also has the honor of serving as the Secretary of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Parliament.
