The Sustainable Future Project

Taki (not her real name) is 43-years-old and she is HIV positive. She stays in a shack with her 22-year-old son and her 6-year-old daughter. Taki was referred to Afrika Tikkun by a local clinic. When we first visited her, she was in denial of her health condition and could hardly take care of herself and her young daughter. We found out that she was suffering from Tuberculosis and was not taking her medication. Our Primary Health Care Workers began to visit her every day, making sure she took her medicine, and provided her regular counseling to help her regain her health. Taki’s daughter was also enrolled in our Early Childhood Development Program and the family was given monthly food parcels.

Taki’s health improved so much that she began to volunteer in our community garden. She has now fully recovered and has also found work. Recently her daughter graduated from Early Childhood Development Program and we witnessed Taki crying with joy and bursting with pride.

Because of your help and generous contribution, we have continued to serve disadvantaged families in South Africa and have committed to ensure the health and well-being of our beneficiaries. At Afrika Tikkun we believe that education programs for children and youth cannot take place in isolation. Our core programs are augmented by support services, which include Primary Health Care for children, youth and their families. Afrika Tikkun’s Primary Health Care Program is a vital component of our holistic ‘cradle to career’ development model that is committed to combating and caring for clients with diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and other chronic diseases. Our comprehensive approach enables our beneficiaries to break the cycle of poverty and reach their full potential by overcoming the socio-economic and health challenges in the disadvantaged communities.
