Sophy joined Afrika Tikkun’s Youth Skills Development Program with the hope to improve her life and develop skills necessary for her to access the job market. Sophy was raised by a single mother who worked as a domestic worker and could hardly support the family. According to Sophy, her mother’s salary was not enough to full fill their basic needs and thus, she had to struggle in accessing quality education.
Regardless of all these difficulties, Sophy’s hard work and determination to learn, enabled her to successfully graduate from our Youth Skills Development and Placement Program. Afrika Tikkun’s Youth Skills Development and Placement Program is augmented by supplementary support services, which include primary health care, nutritional and food security services, psychological/psychosocial services and family support services. This comprehensive approach allows us to address the social barriers that impedes the development of many disadvantaged students like Sophy. Our National Job Database allowed Sophy to access two learnership opportunities, one at The Shawano Area Young Professionals (SAYPRO) and the other at The Expanded Public Works Program (EPWP). Currently she is being considered for employment at Bidvest Bank.
