Empowering the Youth to Become Leaders of Tomorrow

By Mehdeen Sehgal | Marketing and Development Associate

Sophy joined Afrika Tikkun’s Youth Skills Development Program with the hope to improve her life and develop skills necessary for her to access the job market. Sophy was raised by a single mother who worked as a domestic worker and could hardly support the family. According to Sophy, her mother’s salary was not enough to full fill their basic needs and thus, she had to struggle in accessing quality education.

Regardless of all these difficulties, Sophy’s hard work and determination to learn, enabled her to successfully graduate from our Youth Skills Development and Placement Program. Afrika Tikkun’s Youth Skills Development and Placement Program is augmented by supplementary support services, which include primary health care, nutritional and food security services, psychological/psychosocial services and family support services. This comprehensive approach allows us to address the social barriers that impedes the development of many disadvantaged students like Sophy. Our National Job Database allowed Sophy to access two learnership opportunities, one at The Shawano Area Young Professionals (SAYPRO) and the other at The Expanded Public Works Program (EPWP). Currently she is being considered for employment at Bidvest Bank.

The impact that we have made in the lives of young people like Sophy, couldn’t have been possible without the contribution of donors like you. Your support has enabled Afrika Tikkun to provide quality services in:

  • Education: providing learning support for young people to continue their education and overcome the deficits of public education.
  • Leadership & Life Skills: focusing on competencies such as decision making, communication, problem solving, alternative dispute resolution, Respect, self-awareness, identity and value, and alternatives to the fatalistic.
  • Sports: a team-building environment where children and youth can play and learn through the development of individual- and team-sports skills.
  • Arts and Culture: a safe and nurturing environment which enables children and youth to not only participate and learn different art forms but also express themselves creatively.
  • Computer Skills Program: providing basic computer skills and computer-based learning support to enhance student’s access to information and opportunities.
  • Career Guidance: exposing beneficiaries to various career paths and opportunities, appropriate subject choices for each career and criteria for admission into higher educational institutions.

On behalf of our 20,000+ beneficiaries, we would like to thank you for your ongoing support. Your contribution has allowed Afrika Tikkun to provide holistic cradle to career development programs to the marginalized population of South African townships and has strengthen our efforts against poverty and social inequality.
