Sustaining Dignity and Care for Grace Residents Through GlobalGiving Support
The funding that Woodside Sanctuary receives from GlobalGiving remains vital in ensuring the continued care and dignity of its Grace Residents—those who have been orphaned, abandoned, or come from severely disadvantaged families and for whom Woodside carries the full financial responsibility. This support directly contributes to the comprehensive costs of daily care, including specialised nursing, nutritious meals, medical treatment, therapy programmes, hygiene supplies, and appropriate accommodation. It also enables access to essential stimulation and multi-sensory activities that enhance quality of life and support each resident in reaching their full potential. Without this funding, meeting even the most basic needs of these vulnerable residents would be a significant challenge. GlobalGiving’s contribution therefore plays a critical role in sustaining both operational capacity and the compassionate, holistic care that defines Woodside.
Advancing Sustainability Through Solar Energy
Woodside’s solar initiative represents a major step toward long-term sustainability and operational efficiency. With generous donor support, a 150 kW, three-phase solar system with 120 kWh battery storage has been successfully installed, now powering high-consumption areas such as the Laundry, Nursing Department, Stimulation Departments, and two wards.
Further enhancements have increased battery capacity to 180 kWh, alongside additional solar panels and key infrastructure upgrades, including distribution board rewiring and integration with the borehole system. These improvements have strengthened resilience during load-shedding and reduced reliance on grid electricity.
With Phase One complete, a strategic review is underway to guide future expansion. Scaling the system remains a priority, with continued fundraising efforts aimed at significantly reducing long-term operational costs.
Expanding the 500 Club Lottery
The 500 Club continues to play an important role in building predictable, recurring income. Currently, 298 tickets are sold, generating approximately R178,800 annually. While this reflects steady progress, it remains below the long-term goal of 2,000 members, which could generate over R1 million per year.
Expanding the 500 Club is therefore a key strategic focus for 2026. Planned efforts include targeted marketing campaigns, improved digital promotion, activations, and stronger engagement with both existing and prospective supporters to grow membership and increase visibility.
Strengthening Our Digital Presence
Recognising the importance of digital platforms in modern fundraising, Woodside has continued to strengthen its online presence. Social media growth has been supported by more structured content planning and improved storytelling, allowing for more effective sharing of resident stories and donor impact.
Investment in new content creation equipment has significantly enhanced the quality and consistency of visual outputs, while progress on a new website is underway. Following initial delays, professional developers have now been engaged to complete the project. Once launched, the website will serve as a central hub for engagement, storytelling, and online fundraising.
Adapting to a Changing Funding Landscape
Woodside Sanctuary continues to navigate an increasingly complex and evolving funding environment. Donor priorities shift over time due to economic pressures, emerging social challenges, and changing philanthropic trends, which can impact the consistency of traditional funding streams. In response, Woodside is actively working to diversify its income by strengthening relationships with existing donors, cultivating new partnerships, investigating new possible income streams, expanding corporate and grant funding opportunities, and enhancing its digital fundraising capabilities. By remaining agile, clearly demonstrating impact, and aligning initiatives with donor interests while staying true to its mission, Woodside is positioning itself for greater financial resilience and long-term sustainability.
Special Events and Celebrations at Woodside Sanctuary
Celebrations and special events remain an essential part of life at Woodside, bringing joy, connection, and a sense of belonging to our residents.
Our 2025 Christmas celebrations were a highlight of the year, made possible through the generosity of donors and supporters. Residents enjoyed a festive day filled with gifts, entertainment, and meaningful moments of joy and togetherness, ensuring that each individual felt valued and remembered during the holiday season.
In February, Woodside hosted a Valentine’s Day function, creating a warm and celebratory environment where residents could experience love, friendship, and connection. The event included themed activities, treats, and opportunities for residents to engage in a joyful and inclusive atmosphere.
This was followed by our Easter celebrations, which once again brought together donors, volunteers, and community partners. Residents received Easter eggs and personalised treats, and enjoyed activities such as Easter egg hunts and interactive visits. These events not only provide enjoyment but also play a meaningful role in emotional wellbeing, reinforcing a sense of community and care.
Campaigns, Community, and Connection
Woodside’s fundraising campaigns and community engagement initiatives continue to strengthen both financial sustainability and community involvement. The Christmas and Easter campaigns, in particular, generated strong support through financial and in-kind donations.
Partnerships with organisations such as the University of Johannesburg have added further value, with staff and students engaging directly with residents. These interactions foster inclusion, raise awareness, and deepen the connection between Woodside and the broader community.
Investing in Capacity and Operational Excellence
Ongoing investment in infrastructure and operations ensures that Woodside maintains a high standard of care. The replacement of an ageing vehicle with a reliable 2021 Suzuki Swift has improved operational efficiency, particularly for medical visits and essential transport.
Security upgrades have further strengthened the safety of residents and staff, reflecting Woodside’s commitment to a secure and supportive environment.
Additionally, the appointment of a new Junior Marketing Coordinator has enhanced communication efforts, resulting in more consistent messaging and improved campaign execution.
Looking Ahead: Strategy and Sustainability
Woodside remains focused on building a sustainable future through clear strategic priorities. These include expanding recurring income streams such as the 500 Club, securing dedicated funding for Grace Residents, and strengthening digital engagement and fundraising effectiveness.
While funding challenges persist, Woodside is committed to proactive adaptation, innovation, and responsible growth to ensure continued delivery of high-quality care.
In Closing
Woodside Sanctuary extends its sincere gratitude to every donor, partner, and supporter—especially those contributing through GlobalGiving. Your generosity enables us to sustain operations, invest in critical infrastructure, and provide compassionate, dignified care to our residents.
Together, we continue to create a home filled with love, dignity, and hope, and we look forward to building an even more sustainable future for those entrusted to our care.
