Background:
The SOL Foundation with its Co-OP collaboration partner with Florise Women Group, a grassroots charitable organization in Suna Migori County, Kenya, our mission was to to alleviate poverty and promote economic independence among women. The group proposes a poultry project and kitchen market gardens to empower 20 women, reducing their dependence on their husbands' fishing income.
Objectives:
1. Economic Empowerment: Enhance the economic status of women in Suna Migori County.
2. Food Security: Improve food availability and nutrition among the target group.
3. Sustainable Livelihoods: Establish a sustainable livelihood project that can be replicated and scaled up.
Methodology:
1. Poultry Project: We provided 10 women with 4 pullets and 1 cockerel of improved local chicken breeds, along with training on poultry management.
2. Kitchen Market Gardens: We also aided them with seeds for 3 different types of vegetables and training on kitchen garden management.
3. Implementation: Each member would then implement the project in her home with the help of the local officer.
4. Monitoring and Evaluation: Regular monitoring and evaluation is conducted to assess the project's progress and impact.
Expected Outcomes:
1. Increased Income: Women group members will generate income through poultry and vegetable sales.
2. Improved Food Security: The project will enhance food availability and nutrition among the target group.
3. Empowered Women: Women will be economically independent and confident.
Sustainability:
1. Revolving Fund: Returns from the first group will be used to establish the same project for the remaining group members.
2. Local Partnerships: Collaborations with local agricultural extension officers and other stakeholders will ensure the project's continuity.
Timeline:
1. Project Implementation: 6 months
2. Monitoring and Evaluation: Ongoing
3. Project Completion: 12 months
