In the wake of the devastating Maui wildfires of August 8, 2023, healing has taken many forms—brick by brick, breath by breath. The Maui Resilience Project continues to offer a vital sanctuary for survivors, not just through the rebuilding of homes, but through the rebuilding of the human spirit.
Over the past year and a half, communities have begun to rise from the ashes. Homes are steadily being rebuilt, with local contractors and volunteer organizations working side by side to restore a sense of place and permanence. But alongside this physical restoration, an equally powerful journey is unfolding: the inner healing of our people.
Each week, survivors gather for free classes in yoga, tai chi, and mindfulness meditation, offered as part of the Maui Resilience Project’s commitment to holistic recovery. These sessions provide more than just movement—they are moments of stillness, strength, and community. Inhale. Exhale. Reconnect.
Currently held in open-air spaces—parks, shaded clearings, and beachfronts—the classes make use of Maui’s natural beauty as a backdrop for restoration. The sounds of the ocean and the gentle rustling of palm trees serve as a reminder that nature, like us, endures and regenerates.
As we move into the second half of 2025, we are excited to announce that plans are underway for a dedicated indoor healing space. This community center will provide a weather-proof venue for classes, workshops, and wellness gatherings, offering continuity and comfort year-round. The space will also serve as a symbol of collective resilience—a safe harbor where survivors can rebuild not just what was lost, but what is possible.
Thank you to everyone who has supported this project—from local instructors and volunteers to donors and community leaders. Together, we’re helping Maui not only recover, but thrive—body, mind, and soul.
With aloha and gratitude,
The Maui Resilience Project Team
