We are very excited to report that our project: "500 Hungry Children - A Lasting Solution" has been fully funded! In fact, we were able to raise even more than we needed to help the children of these rural schools in the Cotacachi Region of Ecuador begin their journey toward better nutrition and a brighter future.
Since the project started, we have had 85 separate donations from 68 generous donors, enabling us to raise a grand total of $6,675 that has gone directly to our Ecuador team to help with a lasting solution to fight hunger and poverty in Cotacachi. Our technical team is hard at work helping these students and their families learn to plant and harvest nutritious vegetables, take care of small livestock for protein consumption, and raise crops for animal feed.
Now that the Ecuador school project has been funded, we would like you to know about the urgent financial needs we have in the Piura Region of Peru, where nearly 30% of the young children have stunted height due to malnutrition. With no other options, these farm families are stuck in an impossible situation that they have little hope of escaping.
Our current program in Peru includes over 123 families in Huarochiri and Pakiapampa who have been learning about proper hygiene and nutrition, how to plant sequential gardens, raise small livestock, plant a variety of field crops, and learn hygiene and nutrition. Our successful mentoring program helps these rural families to achieve nutritional and financial self-reliance with sustainable agriculture. As families learn to eat a varied diet of food that they raise themselves, they are protected against unforeseen events in the climate and economy. Excess products are marketed to provide income for non-food items such as school fees and household items.
We are now using the "train the trainers" model in which our staff are teaching dozens of technicians who will go out to new villages to train more families and expand our reach exponentially. In fact, we are planning to reach about 600 to 800 new families in Frias, Tambo Grande, Chulucanas, and other villages in the Piura region. We need your help to make this a reality! Thank you again for your enthusiastic support of our programs. We strive every day to make sure your money is used wisely to help our program families reach nutritional and economic self reliance. You are a critical partner in this important endeavor.
