Misunderstood Starter Pack

Introducing the PWC misunderstood starting pack!

Pumpkin, the Virginia opossum, is our first starter. Due to their appearance and their diet of carrion or garbage, opossums are often seen as dirty and gross. However, they play vital roles in our ecosystem. Opossums are predators of venomous snakes. They have proteins that protect them from the snake venom. They also are unlikely to carry rabies due to their low body temperatures.

Next, we have Peep and Speckles. Pigeons are often seen as dirty, unintelligent birds. However, did you know that pigeons were domesticated as livestock? The practice of eating pigeons has been recorded in Egypt, Rome, China, India, and many European countries. Pigeons are also intelligent birds. They can learn to recognize art styles and correctly match novel paintings to artists. They can also be trained as allergy-alert animals.

Finally, we have the rat pack! Similar to our other misunderstood animals, rats are often considered dirty, creepy creatures. However, similar to pigeons, rats are intelligent. They are capable of solving puzzles and have even been recorded displaying empathy. If a rat is placed in an enclosure with a fellow rat that is trapped it will work to free the trapped rat, even if they've never met before. If the rat cannot free its trapped roommate, it will bring it food.

Our misunderstood ambassadors help to fight the stigmas associated with their species. Through your continued support, we can provide them with enrichment, medical care, and food to thank them for all the work they do.
