New Exciting Developments at the HUB!

Dear Friends and Supporters!

It has been a very busy period since our last report. Let me give you some overall context about the political and social climate in which we operate.

The current conservative government has implemented stricter policies toward migration and asylum seekers, including building new detention centers and increasing the number of border patrols. Illegal pushbacks occur on sea and land borders - denied by the Greek Government and ignored by Europe, despite several compelling reports about such practices to the European Court of Human Rights. Illegal pushbacks are a violation of international law, and they put refugees and migrants at risk of harm and persecution. We hope that the upcoming elections on May 20th will vote in a government that will ensure that their actions are in line with international law and that refugees are treated with respect and dignity.

Our integration center at the Athens HUB is far from the frontline of these inexplicable events. We focus on improving and expanding our integration services to persons with refugee and migrant backgrounds by offering employability support and vocational training.

Some highlights from the HUB:

  • Six of 18 students who participated in our Care Giving/Assistant Nursing vocational training pilot also completed their 40 hours of practical training at the Filoxenia Hospital in Athens, following the 100 hours of theoretical training with a professional nurse from the German Malteser Hilfsdienst and a certified first aid course. The remaining students are in the pipeline to also complete their practical training to receive the official certificate. Because of the overall positive feedback and high demand in this sector, we are already planning the second training for September.
  • The 2nd we-educate vocational TESOL teachers training with English as a second language started last month with 10 new candidates.
  • INTECHgration is preparing and recruiting new candidates for its 3rd round of professional training in programming and web design.
  • Founders, teachers, and volunteers participated in an inspiring and challenging workshop on inclusion and equity at the HUB – mostly affirming our actions but also opening up new perspectives and strategies for more inclusion.

Our language classes are well-attended and teachers are doing a fantastic job to keep their students engaged. Especially our Greek department is intensely preparing for the Ellinomathia Greek exams at the End of May. There is a lot of pressure for both teachers and students since these exams take place only once a year. So far we have 23 students hoping to sit these exams. Fingers crossed!

Our team of volunteers and interns is busy keeping the system running, adding additional valuable services i.e.tutoring, CV writing, conversation classes, organizing field trips, etc to the busy HUB schedule.

We thank all our loyal donors for their solidarity!

And a HUGE thank you to the GG Team

Gabi, Catharina and Gabriella, and all ECHOS
