As the winter draws to a close and the temperature changes from hot to very hot, the community of Caraballo keeps humming. The local sugar refinery showed promise of re-opening 3 years ago, but has again fallen into a state of inactivity. This has made our work in Caraballo that much more important, with too many youth out of work and not enough opportunities to lift themselves out of poverty and extreme poverty.
The good news (thanks to YOU!) is that our 79 Montessori students and 5 local, certified teachers are having a major impact on the future of this community. Our teachers continue to train in professional development every Friday with our staff, refining their technique, improving the quality of the education provided. This holiday, Millwoods provided more than $6,000 to keep this vital program alive, but we always need more visionaries. As always, DREAM is a 100% model, so any contribution made goes directly to this program, adding more students, more materials and more support for the local teachers.
Our public library and Young Stars after school program continues with our lead teacher Anis. The mornings provide special assistance for local public school students and afternoons are Young Star classes. We have also continued providing the community with Sports for Life (DPV) training in sexual health, HIV/AIDS and responsible decision making. These programs are so important to educating and supporting Caraballo's youth, offering a resource that can be the difference to a young student looking for a better life.
Thank you so much for your continues support, without your help, this would only be a DREAM!
