Children of the Night Summer Update

By Dr. Lois Lee | Founder & President, Children of the Night

Our National Toll-Free 24-Hour Hotline

From January 1 – July 11, 2016, we received 3297 calls on our toll free nationwide sex trafficking hotline.

There were

  • 2639 young women
  • 363 young men
  • 141 transgender
  • 154 gender unknown

Of those callers

  • 12 were rescued directly from a pimp/trafficker
  • 1097 received intervention in a crisis
  • 87 were referred to other shelters because of their age or location

Children of the Night's Shelter Home

Children of the Night is the only place in North America where a parent may send their child for recovery from sex trafficking/prostitution and not have to relinquish his/her parental rights.

Between January 1 – July 11, 2016, our shelter home received 53 children (ages 11 -17) who have been sex trafficked right here in the United States.

25% of the children referred to the Children of the Night were referred by other programs. 21% were referred by social services, and 17% were referred by police. So far this year, only 2% were referred by a parent or other family member.

  • 2 are taking summer courses at a local community college
  • 2 completed the GED
  • 2 are attending a College Prep University Summer Camp
  • 1 is attending a Law & Leadership Summer Camp
  • Our 16 year old was awarded recognition in the Los Angeles County Science Fair Engineering Applications
  • 3 students passed our comprehensive Independent Living Program (how to take public transportation, create a budget, negotiate a lease)
  • 15 achieved keyboarding speeds in excess of 50 wpm
  • 2 completed a parenting program including wearing an empathy belly, caring for a RealCare baby for one week, and developing a parenting budget

**Completion of the independent living program and the achievement of at least 50 wpm in keyboarding provides the child with the opportunity to attend driver’s training.

  • 3 completed driver’s training program
