The Blossom Bus: Help Rural Girls Get To School!

The Blossom Bus Program was launched in 2010 to address critical transport barriers preventing rural girls from accessing secondary and higher education. Through the Blossom Bus, girls from rural villages are able to travel safely and reliably to school each day. By addressing one of the biggest barriers to girls’ education—safe transportation—the project helps ensure that girls can remain in school, complete secondary education with knowledge and confidence enough to strike out on a career path and make a mark on the world!

There's nothing more satisfying for us than seeing real change in social attitudes toward girls' higher education at the community level. There are none more qualified to bear witness to changes in social and parental behaviour than our mentors riding to and from school with the girls daily and often going to bat for them when asked for help to convince their parents to keep them in school and out of marriage as long as possible.

Preeti, the mentor at Kushak school, tells us,"One day a girl came to me very quietly and said she didn’t want to come to school because her parents were asking her to stay home and help with household work. I spoke gently to her parents and explained how important her education is. After a few discussions, they agreed, and now she comes to school regularly. Seeing her smile again made me feel so satisfied.” 

To better understand the impact of Blossom Bus program on adolescent girls from remote villages of India, here is a reflection from Aarti, a Class 12 Science student from Kushak village.

"My name is Aarti, and I’m in grade 12. I live in Kushak village with my parents, Yogesh and Seema, my two brothers, and three sisters. My father is a farmer, and my mother is a homemaker. Like many farming families, we work hard and carefully manage our resources, but my parents have always believed that education is the greatest gift they can give their children.

Our school is about three kilometres from our home. Although the distance may not seem very far, travelling every day was not easy. My parents often worried about my safety, especially during the rainy season or when I had to return home late after school activities. There were days when the journey felt tiring, and reaching school on time was a challenge.

Everything changed when I started travelling on the Blossom Bus.

The first day I boarded the bus, I felt a sense of relief. I no longer had to worry about the journey. Every morning, I travel with other girls from nearby villages. We laugh, talk about our studies, and encourage one another. What was once a stressful journey has become one of the happiest parts of my day.

The mentor on the bus, Ms.Preeti greets us warmly every morning and makes sure each girl is present and safe. She takes attendance, checks on us throughout the journey, and always asks how we are doing. She is a mentor and also a caring guide and a source of strength for all of us. She encourages us to study hard, reminds us to stay disciplined, and listens patiently whenever we have any worries or questions. She also motivates us to believe in ourselves and never give up on our dreams. Her support and kind words have always given me confidence, especially during the pressure of preparing for my exams.

I dream of pursuing higher education and building a successful career so that I can support my parents, who have sacrificed so much for our family. I also want to become a role model for my younger brothers and sisters and prove that girls from small villages can achieve great things when they are given the right opportunities.

Whenever I look out of the bus window at the fields we pass each morning, I feel hopeful. The road that once seemed full of challenges now feels like a path leading me towards my dreams.

The Blossom Bus has given me much more than a safe ride to school—it has given me confidence, hope, and the opportunity to believe in a brighter future. For that, I will always be grateful.
