805 UndocuFund – May 2023 Update
Recent storms and flooding in California have caused billions of dollars in damage and unthinkable disruption to vulnerable populations along the Central Coast. Meanwhile, many undocumented neighbors have been left with damaged or lost property, such as vehicles, and undocumented farmworkers continue to face difficulty finding work due to crop damage.
In response, 805 UndocuFund has been hard at work raising funds for Ventura and Santa Barbara County residents ineligible for federal disaster relief programs due to their immigration status. With your support, 805 UndocuFund was able to successfully apply for grants from the League of California Community Foundations and the Weingart Foundation. Together, these grant awards will provide an additional $60,000 that will go towards support for approximately 145 families with undocumented immigration status, allowing them to focus on recovery knowing that that they are supported and not forgotten by our shared community.
With so much damage and so few resources, the support and peace of mind that 805 UndocuFund provides for these families is vital to the resiliency that has defined Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties as they have navigated unprecedented wildfires, the COVID-19 pandemic, and now devastating flooding. 805 UndocuFund and its partners, including the Ventura County Community Foundation, continue to pay close attention to gaps in recovery and are working to close these gaps in real time. We believe the strength of our shared communities is dependent upon empowering the most vulnerable among us, as it will leave us as ready as possible to face future disasters. Our work with undocumented communities is the fulfillment of this promise.
The Future for 805 UndocuFund
805 UndocuFund continues to mobilize resources when disaster hits, providing short-term financial relief to undocumented residents in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, and advocating for long-term systems change to ensure undocumented residents are effectively included in disaster planning, preparedness, response, and recovery. Recently 805 UndocuFund has had a transition in leadership. Its first Executive Director has left for another opportunity but has left the organization strong and in a good position to continue to make a difference. The committed Board of Directors has engaged an interim Exec Director with deep knowlede of the community served and the services of 805 UndocuFund.
