From Water Scarcity to Hope
Access to clean and safe water is essential for good health, education, and family well-being. Through its Water Life Project, Another Hope Children’s Ministries (AHCM) supports vulnerable households by constructing rainwater harvesting tanks to improve access to water for domestic use and farming.
Before AHCM’s intervention, households in Namuzikiza faced severe water scarcity. The entire village depended on a single borehole, which became overwhelmed by demand and eventually stopped functioning. Families struggled to access water, and purchasing a 10-litre jerry can was costly, placing additional financial pressure on low-income families.
The water shortage affected almost every aspect of daily life:
Safety Risks: Teenage girls had to travel long distances in the evening and late into the night to fetch water, exposing themselves to potential safety risks.
Physical Strain: Young children struggled to carry heavy jerry cans on their heads, putting their physical health and well-being at risk.
Disrupted Learning: Children lost valuable time for studying, completing academic assignments, playing, and resting because fetching water was an arduous daily chore.
Household Hardship: Parents faced major difficulties preparing meals on time, maintaining hygiene, and securing enough water for domestic farming.
The Intervention and Its Impact
Through donor support for the Lent 2026 campaign, AHCM successfully constructed a household rainwater harvesting tank in Namuzikiza. The tank enables the resident family to collect and store clean rainwater directly at home, significantly reducing reliance on unreliable or distant water sources.
This intervention has brought meaningful, long-term improvements to the household:
Improved Water Access: Provides a convenient, reliable source of harvested rainwater for daily domestic use and kitchen gardening.
Enhanced Safety: Reduces the need for young girls to make long, unsafe journeys in search of water.
Protected Health: Eases the physical burden on children from carrying heavy water containers over long distances.
Educational Support: Reclaims time for children to study, complete homework, play, and rest properly.
Financial Relief: Eliminates the routine expense of purchasing daily water jerry cans, freeing up funds for other household necessities.
Improved Family Welfare: Simplifies meal preparation, household cleaning, personal hygiene, and laundry.
Livelihood Enhancement: Supplies reliable water for household farming and small-scale agriculture.
A Story of Hope and Transformation
For the supported household, this water tank represents much more than physical infrastructure—it brings dignity, relief, and renewed hope. What was once a daily struggle to locate water has become a manageable, self-sustaining process. The family now has greater control over their daily needs, and the children have the opportunity to focus on their education and enjoy their childhood safely.
Conclusion & Next Steps
The Lent 2026 Water Life Project demonstrates AHCM’s ongoing commitment to improving community welfare through practical, sustainable solutions. By bringing clean water directly to households, AHCM helps alleviate poverty, safeguard children, promote education, and build community resilience.
Expanding this initiative to additional water-stressed households in Mityana District will enable even more families to transform their lives through safe water access.
