Deep in the mountains of Chibombo lies a small haven like community called Our Moon. This small set up has helped to give birth to the dreams of many students. Our Moon helps young people in Zambia to access quality education and equips them with the skills to become socially conscious professionals. Our Moon provides a one year, full time, residential gap year programme in Zambia that develops students reading, communication, critical thinking and problem solving skills. Students work on local projects and produce a reflective essay as well as take SATs and SAT subject tests. Our Moon guides students with their university applications so that they fulfil their academic aspirations and are able to bring home the skills, knowledge and dispositions they gain.
When I was told I gained acceptance into Our Moon, I was greatly elated. I have always wanted to study Computer Science for my Undergraduate Degree in an international University. I was well aware that entrance into the Our Moon Gap Year Program was the launch pad I needed to help me get into University and pursue my lifelong dream.
At Our Moon, we did a lot of programs to help us prepare for our University applications. We horned our writing skills for the 4000-word essay. Practicing the writing of this essay taught me how to tap into my creativity, improve my grammatical skills and also the small things like punctuations and the coherent arrangement of ideas. My topic for the 4000-word essay was “the Future of Work in Light of Artificial Intelligence”.
We also practiced for our SAT’s. SAT’s are crucial in entrance to universities in the United States of America. The tests include English, Arithmetic, Science and Logical Reasoning. The preparations can be intensive and rigorous. However, we had great access to electronic tools such as Khan academy and our tutors at Our Moon were very handy.
Lastly as part of our preparations, we took part in community service. Personally, I embarked in a literacy project by helping young people in the Chibombo Community in reading and writing. We reached out to more than a 100 young people within the age of 9 and 13. The kids were extremely happy with our assistance and showed promise of a great future.
The Our Moon Gap Year Program not only prepared us for University applications but for life of making a difference in our society. It was a great experience that I hope other young people can take part in.
