Though Hurricane Florence hit the eastern North Carolina coast nearly eight months, ago there are still countless survivors with no safe, stable place to live after the storm and subsequent flooding damaged their homes.
Just since early April 2019, as a result of a grant from GlobalGiving, Lutheran Services Carolinas (LSC) has been able to provide temporary shelter assistance to 13 survivor households, representing 37 adults and children. Take for instance, Sandra, a single mother who had been living in her car for weeks with her three young children while they waited for their home to be repaired. Support from GlobalGiving enabled LSC to move this family out of their car and into a hotel.
Many of the families who survived Hurricane Florence had also been affected by Hurricane Matthew which hit North Carolina just two years earlier. Most had little or no resources available to deal with back to back natural disasters. The temporary shelter assistance LSC is able to offer as a result of this GlobalGiving grant has been a lifeline for struggling survivors as they wait for their damaged homes to be repaired or for other permanent housing options to become available.
