On Saturday 20th August, Shanti Uganda started the teen girl workshop.
The girls came with huge smiles on their faces excited for the days to come.
After being shy at the beginning, they became more confident hours after hours.
Among the girls in attendance was 15 year old Florence. After hearing about the upcoming workshop, Florence and her friends travelled about 1 kilometer eager to see what Shanti had in store for them. Living with her parents, one brother and four sisters, she is always eager to help them. Very busy studying and farming, she is now very happy to be part of the workshop. One of her wishes during this workshop is to make more friends and to have fun “doing something different from my daily life” she said. Also, learning to bake a cake is very important for her. She likes cooking matoke and posho but willing to learn cooking different things.
More than everything else, Florence wants to learn about women empowerment. She is very proud to be a woman but realized few years ago the pain that women suffer from. “Women here suffer a lot when they give birth but also because they work a lot”. She is expressing her wish to learn more about women’s rights and empowerment and happy to be part of Shanti, seeing it as a good opportunity.
Florence likes school and is passionate about languages. When she is not in class, she likes chatting with her best friend about the future. Their hope is to keep studying, her best way to realize her dream : getting a good job in the future to buy a house for her parents to thanks them for everything they have done for her.
With the support of donors, like you, Shanti looks forward to being able to make their future workshops accessible to more girls.
