Next in Shanti Uganda's Teen Girl's Workshop Series is the story of 14 year old Irene.
Irene lives at home with her mother and father in the nearby village of Bukuma - about 2 kilometers away from Shanti. Despite having 2 brothers Irene often finds herself wishing she had more siblings to play with. According to Irene, the majority of her friends have up to 7 siblings! With that said, this feeling of loneliness is usually short lived as being a Class 8 student keeps Irene very busy. In school Irene's best subject is science but she says she prefers math even though she struggles with it.
When she grows up, young Irene would like to be a Bank Manager - just like her uncle. As one of the topics discussed in the workshop was role models, Irene shared that she views her uncle as a role model because of his hard working nature and also her love for the environment he currently lives in. Alongside her uncle, Irene also views her mother as an important role model in her life. Whenever Irene has any deep life questions, or even simple math homework questions, she turns to her mother who always welcomes her with open arms. Irene feels that her mother and her uncle are her number one supporters as they are always there to encourage her - emphasising the importance of positive role models and mentors in the Teen Girl's lives.
When not in school, Irene tries to help her family around the house and her neighbours in any way she can. From Irene's time at Shanti Uganda, it is evident that she has a big heart and is always willing go out of her way to help those in need. In her spare time, Irene likes to keep active either chasing her 2 brothers down or playing netball with her friends.
Upon arriving at Shanti last week, Irene had the hopes of learning more about healthy living. This opportunity for Irene was made possible through the kind donations of continued Shanti Uganda supporters - just like you. Stay tuned to see how Irene's week went at the Teen Girl's Workshop!
