PROJECT: AFTER-SCHOOL APPRENTICESHIPS IN TECHNOLOGY
Citizen Schools believes that the real-world, hands-on learning and experiences of success that characterize excellent apprenticeships will inspire a zest for learning that will carry over into all domains of a student’s life. Further, technology apprenticeships hone in on 21st century skills such as critical thinking and analysis, teamwork, math, and leadership and oral presentation skills.
In 2005-06, Citizen Schools campuses in Massachusetts, New Jersey, Northern California, and Texas offered a variety of technology apprenticeships including:
*website design *digital photography *coding *digital music-making *building a computer *digital logic *automobile engine building
Approximately 275 students participated in these apprenticeships, led by more than 50 volunteer Citizen Teachers from companies such as Google, Xilinx, Northeastern University, and Wired Woods, as well as dozens of individuals with a passion for technology.
