Project Report | May 7, 2024
Tech for Moms Kirtipur

By Sushobhan Chimoriya | Programs and Communications Officer

  • Introduction of Organization

Safer-I is a campaign devoted to crafting a safer digital space for everyone. A space where one can express their views without any security risks, a space that values Inclusivity while also providing an environment where you can express your unique individuality, and finally a space that gives you access to the right information.

The ‘I’ in ‘Safer-I’ stands for Internet, Information, Inclusivity, and Individuality.

Our work is primarily focused on crafting a safe, accessible, ethical, and inclusive digital space for everyone through hands-on workshops, advocacy, and social media awareness.

  • Brief Introduction of Program/Project/Session
  • Activities

  1. Registration & Merch Collection - Day 1
  2. Baseline Survey - Day 1
  3. Sessions on mobile data, wifi, content filtering, blocking & reporting on social media - Day 1
  4. Lunch & Energizer - Day 1
  5. Sessions on Esewa, Daraz University & Facebook Marketplace - Day 2
  6. Lunch & Energizer - Day 2
  7. Endline Survey - Day 2

  9. Testimonials & Photos - Day 2

  • Problem Statement

Mothers in urban Nepal consist of literate middle-aged women with access to all kinds of mobile devices and technology, yet they lack the proper knowledge to use them effectively to make their daily lives and family concerns easier. They are also prone to online fraud and misinformation through malicious news sources. Since mothers are responsible for running the house, a technologically literate mother could mean that the whole family will perform more efficiently in the digital landscape paving the path for growth and prosperity. With proper hands-on teaching, we can empower them to be independent and self-reliant.

  • Timeline

Finalization of the venue - 18th April

Training of Trainers - 24th April

Finalization of the participants - 25th April

Purchase of required resources completed - 27th April

Workshop Day 1 - 28th April

Workshop Day 2 - 29th April

Reporting & Documentation Completion - 20th May

  • Target Audience

The program was targeted towards adult women living around Kirtipur area who had access to their own mobile devices and a basic grasp of mobile usage.

  • Challenges and Learnings

Challenges

  1. Frequent crashing of internet services
  2. The participants were a bit late in reaching the venue delaying the sessions.
  3. Lack of enough time to practice everything being taught with hands-on support

Learnings

  1. When the content is adapted as per their interest, there is more engagement from the participants. Hands-on support in groups help in saving time and facilitator energy.
  2. The participants should have been asked to have a full charge on their phone or bring in their charger (We said this at the end of Day 1 but forgot to convey this before Day 1).
  3. The data packs should be ready before the workshop begins.

  • Impact (regarding the number of women/ girls/ students reached, feedback from participants, Internal analysis)

During the first day of the workshop, there were 23 participants and there were 24 participants during the second day of the workshop. Based on the testimonials and feedback collected from the participants, they were excited about this opportunity and they were glad to learn especially about less discussed things like Daraz University and Facebook Marketplace. All the participants were now able to block, report, and filter content on Facebook and YouTube as a result of the workshop compared to less than 20% of the women saying they could during the baseline survey.
