As part of Leadership Initiatives' International Internship Program, Maya, Chloe, and Anika are partnering with the Gudum Sayawa community in Bauchi State, Nigeria, to support work in Peacebuilding & Conflict Resolution. Working alongside local leaders and community members, the team will research local priorities, strengthen understanding of conflict-related challenges, and help develop community-led strategies that encourage dialogue, cooperation, and lasting peace.
Conflict can weaken trust, disrupt cooperation, and make it harder for families and community leaders to solve shared challenges together. In Gudum Sayawa, understanding the local causes of tension is an important first step. Limited access to structured dialogue, conflict-resolution education, and mediation support can make disagreements more difficult to address and reduce opportunities for residents to build stronger, more peaceful relationships.
Maya, Chloe, and Anika will work with local leaders and residents to identify priorities that can strengthen peace and opportunity in Gudum Sayawa. Funds raised will help support community-led projects based on those priorities, which may include school improvements, clean water boreholes, health clinic needs, girls' education, peacebuilding workshops, vocational training, or small-business support that creates greater economic stability.
The goal is to leave Gudum Sayawa with practical tools and locally led systems that can continue after the internship ends. By supporting trained community facilitators, structured dialogue, youth peace education, and conflict-resolution resources, the project can strengthen communication and cooperation over time. These investments are designed to help residents address disagreements earlier, reduce tensions, and build stronger relationships across the community.
