In Fall 2016, Stepping Stones started its own Videolink Program at two sites, one in suburban Shanghai and the other in rural China. This was a pilot project, which aimed to reach remote areas and improve disadvantaged children’s confidence and interest in English , as well as to provide a more sustainable way for volunteers to give back to the society.
From late October, 3 experienced volunteers provided weekly online English lessons to 30 children studying in a migrant school located in Fengxian district, Shanghai. In total, 5 lessons were delivered. Meanwhile, at a boarding school in Anhui province, 192 left-behind children received monthly English lessons form a group of 11 volunteers in rotation based in California In total, volunteers taught 13 online English lessons.
We are pleased to see that both children and local teachers showed great interest in participating in the videolink English lessons. Stepping Stones plans to install 3 more videolink classrooms in 2017 to cover more children who are no access to quality education. Furthermore, More systematic teaching curriculum and volunteer training plan will be developed and improved in 2017.
