November 23, 2013 marked another milestone for the youth savers of Buenavista Development Cooperative and Guimaras Bretheren Multi-Purpose Cooperative as they pushed through with their tree planting activity in the Co-op Mangrove Protection Area at Brgy. East Valencia, Buenavista, Guimaras. This event, entitled “Puno ng Pagmamahal”, is part of the simultaneous tree planting project planned and developed by the Youth Committee of Region 6 during their Trainers’ Training in Iloilo last October 25-26, 2013. The day started early for the volunteers who came from 9 different schools in Guimaras City. The tree planting project, headed by the Youth Committee of Region 6, aims to emphasize on environmental responsibility especially now that the country has recently been devastated by a super typhoon. Armed with shovels, seedlings, and dreams for a brighter and greener future, the youth volunteers spent an afternoon reviving the mangrove plantation. Mark Vincent Lemery, Aflatoun Coordinator of BDC and Ad hoc Committee Region 6 Youth Leader, shares his experience during the activity:“Our purpose is simple but it can create a great impact. Despite the unpredictability of the weather that day, we took the opportunity to push
through with the planting. With a total of 97 participants, we managed to plant 1,000 seedlings. This is only the start of our advocacy to protect our Mother Earth and our community.” Consequently, Dingle Government Workers’ Development Cooperative also joined the simultaneous tree planting on December 6, 2013. They planted tree seedlings in Bulabog Puti-an Natural Park, Dingle, Iloilo City. With every seedling planted is a dream for a brighter future. The youth volunteers didn’t only revive the mangrove plantation and the natural park, they also became advocates of hope and examples of resiliency. They have also shown that saving the environment is one of the highest forms of savings. Things are looking bright this December for BDC and the Youth Committee as they continue to organize their succeeding activities.
