Good day, global givers! How are you? Hope everything is going well wherever you are.
Today, we are going to share with you another inspiring story from one of our young savers here in the Philippines to motivate us from saving wisely and spending responsibly. When you think that you could not break free from the past habits that could damage your lifestyle, Michael shows the otherwise!
Michael is a Grade 9 Student of San Jose National High School, one of the partner schools of Most Holy Rosary Multi-Purpose Cooperative, in Rodriguez, Rizal. He used to be a typical teenager, hooked on computer and online games. Almost every day in a week, he would only spend most of his allowance and time on computer rental and online games.
When Most Holy Rosary MPC started implementing the Aflatoun program in his school, he found the program interesting and thus sparked his desire to save more money to be deposited on his account. Joining our savings program helped and motivated him to redirect his priorities and to live a more purposeful life.
With this goal etched on his mind, he gradually awakened his entrepreneurial skills and started using his own money to build his micro-enterprise. You will often see him in their school with his paper bag full of goods. With selling leche flan (caramel custard) and turon (fried sweetened banana rolls, he was not only able to profit from his business but he was able to save his income to his account passbook instead of splurging it in playing computer games.
His social skills enabled him to connect and inspire people who are even older than him. His confidence has grown and so are his savings. Michael is an epitome of Aflatoun's pursued outcome for the youth: to be socially and financially invested.
"Nakakatuwa sya! Hindi sya nahihiya kay laki-laking bata nagtitinda ng turon at lecheflan sa school. Lahat ng kita nya sinisave nya sa kanyang #Aflatoun. Ngayon nga, may nakaipit na pera sa kanyang libreta, ihuhulog daw nya yun. Hinahayaan lang naman namin. [He’s amusing! Even though he is tall for his age, he is not ashamed to bring and sell turon and leche flan in his school. What’s even more delightful is that he saves up all of his profit on his account. Actually, he has some money hidden on his passbook right now, and he said he plan to deposit it. We just let him be.]" His mother, Roda, added. His father, Marlon, on the other hand is also a proud member of Most Holy Rosary MPC and everyone in his family is into saving into coop.
His story is truly motivating, hope it inspired you like it did to our team.
Till next update, keep saving!
