Delivering Entrepreneur Skills to Young Filipinos

By Hazel Ann Lenida | Youth Program Associate

Young Entrepreneurs
Young Entrepreneurs

In this complex economy, one potential way of integrating young people into the labor market is to increase youth entrepreneurship.  Becoming an entrepreneur offers benefits to the young person through deepening their human capital and increasing their levels of happiness.  Entrepreneurs create jobs, increase innovation, raise competition and are responsive to changing economic opportunities and trends.

And as a partner of Department of Education in the Financial Education Program for the K-12 Curriculum here in the Philippines, NATCCO continuously contributes to strengthen and promote Entrepreneurship as one of the 21st century skills. For we believe in the capacity and potential of young people to create opportunities for themselves and live a life of creativity, success, and service through entrepreneurship, we have organized the Youth Entrepreneurship Training in different parts of the country. These trainings were held from October 25-27, 2017 in Manila until early January of this year, 2018. From January 6-7 in Catarman, Northern Samar, January 13-14 in Siaton, Negros Oriental and January 27-28 in Siquijor, Siquijor, respectively.

The training aimed to improve the knowledge of youth entrepreneurs on enterprise development as they face the challenges of creating and expanding their businesses.  Through this activity, they were able to assess themselves better, examine the conditions of their enterprises and be prepared in becoming the country’s future entrepreneurs.  These series of trainings were in partnership with Bayan Academy, Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI), Bonbonon Farmers’ Agrarian Reform Multi-Purpose Cooperative (BOFARMPUCO), Northern Samar Multi-Purpose Cooperative (NSDWCC), and Perpetual Help Community Cooperative (PHCCI).

NATCCO, and all of our partners, strongly believe that the youth network is a powerhouse of ideas that can help Cooperatives understand the pulse of the younger generations and other potential markets. By investing on the youth, we give them the opportunity to explore the segmentation, the environment, the Cooperative, and themselves - guiding them to transform these insights into actions and strategies that can best help the Cooperative sector.

The training allowed the children to develop a deeper understanding of their potential to use the social and financial components of Aflatoun to venture into youth entrepreneurship; and apply their learning through a fun enterprise-simulation activity. There were also workshops on self-awareness, the power of choice and habit, creativity, marketing, pricing, and creating personal visions focused on building the children's right attitudes, skills, and mindset in becoming young entrepreneurs.

We hope that through our collective efforts, we can develop the capacity and potential of young people to create opportunities for themselves and live a life of creativity, success, and service through entrepreneurship. What do you think, Global Givers?
