By Hazel Ann Lenida | Children and Youth Program Associate
Good day, Global Givers! Our mission of training the Children and Youth with enough knowledge and skills about social and financial for their future has been going for more than a decades now. And for those years, what helped and inspired to do more and to do better is our partners and the inspiring stories we gathered from all the children we've reached. Now, I am sharing to all of you the stories of our 3 special savers from our partner in Davao, Sta. Ana Multi-Purpose Cooperative (SAMULCO). Hope this will inspire you, too!
This is the story of Susana Eunice, a grade six (6) student of Good Soil Academy of Davao, one of the partner schools of SAMULCO that implements the Aflatoun program. At this day and age of trends and gadgets, enjoys and inspires other to save:
“One thing that motivated me was my number one fans-my parents. Yes, I am hesitant at first to join AFLATOUN because as a child, I would always want to buy the thing that I want. But I thank God I have my parents that never stops encouraging me to save money from my allowance. I could remember the saying 'Have control of your money or the lack of it will control you'.”
And now I am enjoying being a four (4)-year member of SAMULCO aflatoun program. As a member, I encourage all the students to save and be a member of this program. I promise you the joy I experienced that I felt in my heart. Seeing my money grow is so exciting.”
Another inspiring story of our Aflatoun saver named Ronald, a grade 7 student of Talomo National High School who expressed his deepest desire of saving. He’s keen in observing his surrounding and trying to reflect it the cause and effect of the situation he observed.
During SAMULCO Aflatoun collection in their school, Ronald was just observing and listening while the collection in-charge was explaining about aflatoun savings. The next time collection day came, Ronald came first of all the aflatoun savers and applying for aflatoun membership.
“When I was a child, I have the difficulty of saving money because spending is all I know; buying what I want pleases me and indeed I am having fun. But as I grew up I came to realized that money is very important to provide one’s daily needs and even wants. As I observed we have many conflicts in our society today because of the lack of money. Many families were separated, many relationships were broken, many countries got into war and many of our brothers and sisters are starving to death at the moment. The lack of money to sustain is the common reason of POVERTY and PROBLEM.
It’s not enough to have work and got an income for spending. People must learn to save money out of their income and must save for the future usage particularly for burial expense. Death is very expensive so one must learn save for it. Realizing all of these helped me to value saving and discipline myself in spending. I thank SAMULCO for creating Aflatoun in our school and have given me and the other students the opportunity to learn to save money from our allowance. I encourage everyone to be wise and responsible future citizens in our society."
Meet Princess Catherine; a student of Exegesis School of Davao and be inspired with her story.
Catherine the name she wants to be called is the eldest child of the 4 siblings of the family. She was with her classmate one day who enjoyed counting their money for saving. Catherine was very indignant to save too but don’t have enough money for membership. Then she humbly asks the collector in-charged if she could save for her membership fee of 100. With patience and sincerity of the child, she was consistently save 5.00 every time the collector came. Catherine finally able to raise 100 for membership.
The collector asked her why you want to save. Catherine answered, "I want to discipline myself and be a responsible ”ATE” (means elder sister) who know how to save.”
Now, Catherine continue to save and have inspire others; her classmates to save too.
Till next update, keep saving!
