Income through agriculture for Tamil Nadu Families

For a small farming family in Tamil Nadu, a successful harvest can mean food on the table, children continuing their education and greater financial security. A failed crop, rising input costs or falling market prices can put all of these at risk.

VOICE Trust wants to help change this reality by supporting farming families to build more sustainable, diversified and resilient livelihoods.

Through this initiative, we aim to reach 200 farming families with practical agricultural training, sustainable farming techniques and opportunities to generate additional income.

Our impact will focus on five meaningful changes:

1. More Income. Greater Security.

We will help farmers explore ways to reduce cultivation costs, improve farm management, diversify crops and strengthen market access. Our goal is to work towards a 15–20% increase in net farm income among participating families, measured against their baseline.

2. Healthier Farms. A Greener Future.

Farmers will learn practical methods to improve soil health, conserve water, use compost, diversify crops and adopt environmentally responsible farming practices. We aim for at least 150 families to adopt two or more suitable sustainable farming practices.

3. Women Turning Skills into Income.

We aim to support approximately 50 women and rural youth in exploring agricultural enterprises, including food processing, value-added farm products and other locally suitable livelihood opportunities. Training will focus on product development, business skills and access to markets.

4. Young People Finding Opportunities in Agriculture.

By introducing rural youth to sustainable farming, agricultural entrepreneurship and digital marketing, we aim to demonstrate that agriculture can offer opportunities for innovation, self-employment and community development.

5. Stronger Families. Resilient Communities.

When farming families have more reliable livelihood opportunities, they can work towards meeting household expenses, supporting children's education and managing unexpected financial challenges. Diversified livelihoods and better resource management can also help communities prepare for climate-related and market uncertainties.

How We Will Measure Our Progress

Our proposed initial programme will work towards the following targets:

• 200 farming families reached through training and livelihood support.

• 150 families adopting improved sustainable farming practices.

• 50 women and rural youth supported in exploring agricultural enterprises.

• A targeted 15–20% improvement in net farm income among participating families, subject to local conditions and market performance.

We will track progress through baseline surveys, farm records, production costs, sales information, income assessments and feedback from participating families.
