Harvesting Income: Empowering Tamil Nadu Families through Tomato Farming

Organization: VOICE Trust
Location: Tamil Nadu, India

1. Executive Summary

Tomato farming offers a fast and reliable income source for smallholder farmers in Tamil Nadu. However, challenges such as price fluctuations, post-harvest losses, and limited market access prevent families from realizing full benefits.

This project supports 100 rural families, especially women agripreneurs, to improve tomato cultivation, increase income, and build resilient livelihoods through training, inputs, storage, and market linkages.

2. The Need

Small and marginal farmers face:

  • Unstable market prices

  • High input costs

  • Lack of storage infrastructure

  • Limited direct access to markets

Despite good yields, these barriers lead to reduced income and financial insecurity.

3. Project Solution

The initiative strengthens the tomato value chain through:

  • Training in climate-smart agriculture

  • Distribution of quality seeds and inputs

  • Establishment of low-cost storage systems

  • Facilitation of direct market linkages

  • Promotion of women-led agripreneurship

4. Key Activities Implemented

  • Capacity building for farmers

  • Input support for cultivation

  • Post-harvest storage solutions

  • Market access and aggregation support

  • Continuous field-level guidance

5. Impact Achieved

  • 100 farming families supported

  • Increase in farmer income by 30–50%

  • Reduction in post-harvest losses by 20–30%

  • Strengthened participation of women farmers

  • Improved livelihood security and resilience

6. Income Potential (Per Acre)

  • Yield: 10–14 tonnes

  • Gross Income: 80,000 – 1,68,000

  • Net Profit: 46,000 – 1,34,000

This income supports essential needs such as education, food security, and reinvestment in agriculture.
