Teresita Silva – beloved founder and Trustee of Tahanan Sta. Luisa – recently earned the country’s prestigious Saint Teresa of Calcutta Award, given in October 2023.
This annual honor, presented by the AY Foundation, Inc. and the Manila Jaycees, recognizes the profound impact of selfless individuals who have devoted their lives to aiding the less fortunate, following the footsteps of the late Nobel Peace Prize laureate, St. Teresa of Calcutta.
At age 92, Teresita Silva looks back at six decades advocating for disadvantaged children and their struggling families. The Award cites her indelible mark on over 11,500 street children, through the organizations she founded – Childhope for streetchildren and Tahanan Sta. Luisa for at-risk street girls. Under her compassionate guidance, traumatized street girls receive parental care, education, health and psychosocial support through comprehensive healing programs. She continues to visit Tahanan Sta. Luisa to interact and enjoy the company of the girls and to attend Board meetings.
As another gesture of her legacy and total commitment to the vulnerable children she loves, she shared the award prize of one million pesos (PhP1,000,000) with Childhope (PhP500,000) and with Tahanan Sta. Luisa (PhP500,000.
