Swazi SHEROES will work with young women in Eswatini to build entrepreneurial and workforce skills that translate into viable, sustainable economic opportunities in order to mitigate the HIV/AIDs epidemic. Through Swazi SHEROES women will be able to control the tools they need to succeed and will become economically empowered through mentorship, social enterprise, and holistic support so they can have both their health and economic freedom.
Women in Eswatini face the burden of the HIV pandemic due to lack of economic opportunity, which leaves them with little freedom when deciding how they can earn income. This lack of opportunity puts young women in a position where they have to choose financial survival over health. Transactional sex is a way for women to support their families and themselves, and it is often intergenerational. This causes high rates of HIV/AIDS that disproportionately affect young women.
Through Swazi SHEROES, women will be able to control the tools they need in order to achieve economic freedom and fully flourish. Through program objectives such as holistic support, social enterprise, and mentoring, the women of Eswatini will be able to harness their full potential and finally take a seat at the economic table where their health, livelihoods, and future will be in their own hands.
The project will provide women with economic independence allowing them to rise out of poverty and dependence on transactional sex. In addition, they will improve their overall mental health through the holistic care components of the program. Women will be able to complete the program and mentor other women. Through holistic support, mentorship, and social enterprise the young women of Eswatini will unlock their full potential and put finally have their future within their own hands.
