Sustainable Rural Life (SRL)
During 2012, FMCN (Mexican Fund for the Conservation of Nature, www.fmcn.org) has been able to expand the SRL project by partnering with the following NGOs: Niparajá in Baja California, Profauna in Coahuila, U’yo’olche in Quintana Roo, and the cooperative of Mujeres Rurales de la Frontera Sur in Tabasco. Thanks to our donors we acquired all the materials needed to build cook stoves and purchase hot pots for rural communities in four states in Mexico.
Educational workshops for community members on different clean cookstove designs (Onil, Patsari, Túumben K´óoben and Lorena) took place during these months. The different models take into consideration the diversity of cultures, traditions, and ecosystems in Mexico. For example, the clean cookstove model Túumben K´óoben is built with local materials that can only be found in the Southern Mexican Peninsula.
More than 500 families have benefitted from SRL in 2012, as the table above shows.
Our short-term project objectives include expanding ecotechnologies distribution to at least two more rural areas, near Coahuila and Queretaro.
We are delighted to share with you some images that show the beautiful story of Apolinaria, an 85-year-old Mayan woman, who is immensely proud of her new stove. Improving communities’ quality of life, gender equity, and reducing exposure to woodsmoke are some of our proud achievements.
It is fulfilling and an enormous motivation to work with this project, which is helping to change lives in rural Mexico.
