Progress with one of our partners in the field

Dear friends,

We hope you are well during this end-of-year season.

We’d like to let you know that despite all the challenges that this year’s pandemic has brought us, the project Community Promotors and Renewable Energies, which we are executing in the Yucatan Peninsula with our local partner Túumben Kóoben, has continued developing with positive results and new experiences that will strengthen the project for times to come.

The Túumben Kóoben cooperative was founded in 2011 and one of its goals is to contribute to developing sustainable societies through the implementation of alternative environmentally-friendly technologies that are efficient and adaptable to local conditions. This project, which you have been supporting through Sustainable Rural Life, has the objective of consolidating and training a team of at least 12 promotors in the Yucatan Peninsula on adequate management strategies for firewood and solar energy systems. The goal is to promote the reduction of emissions resulting from deforestation and the use of fossil-fuel energy, as well as to implement alternative technologies in communities and knowledge-exchange centers.

The project contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals in gender equality and climate action. In the first case, it incorporates the gender perspective by ensuring the participation and active dialogue among both men and women in the proposed activities, in addition to requiring at least 50% of women promotors in its formation. In the second case, the project plans to foster two important sources of clean energy in the Yucatan Peninsula: On the one hand, the installation of wood-saving cookstoves that will help families, who live in single constructions and use the same space to cook and sleep, to have smoke-free environments while reducing CO2 emissions by reducing the amount of firewood by 40% for cooking. On the other hand, solar, renewable and environmentally-friendly energy, demystifying the complexity of its installation and functionality.

By the end of the project, there will be 85 wood-saving cookstoves built in the trained communities. Additionally, at least five solar energy sources will be installed, and at least six promotion and training events will be carried out by the promotor team.

Estimados amigos y colaboradores:
