Dear GlobalGiving Supporters,
We’re excited to share some significant milestones from our project, which has surpassed its initial goals and is now benefiting more families than anticipated. Thanks to your support, we expanded our efforts to nine communities in the Ixcán region of Guatemala, where poverty rates are high, and natural resources are at risk.
Agroforestry: Restoring Land and Livelihoods
This year, we’ve established 37.5 hectares of agroforestry systems, with the participation of 71 farmers and their families. These systems feature a variety of crops, including mahogany, Inga edulis, lemon, mandarin, orange, avocado, rambutan, sapodilla, soursop, and red mamey. To diversify production, we also added plantains to the system, distributing 768 trees that produced 30,720 plantains. Approximately half were used for family consumption, while the other half was sold at $0.32 per unit, generating $4,992 in income for participating families.
Beekeeping: Supporting New and Existing Producers
We’ve also made significant progress with our beekeeping program. In 2024, we onboarded 12 new beekeepers and provided ongoing support to 60 existing beekeepers, bringing our total to 546 beehives. This year, the beekeepers produced an impressive 22,848 pounds of honey!
These activities have not only improved incomes for rural and Indigenous families but also contributed to the restoration of degraded land and the conservation of natural resources.
Looking Ahead
We remain committed to expanding these agroforestry and beekeeping systems to ensure long-term sustainability for both the environment and the communities we serve. Your support is helping families secure their livelihoods and manage the resources they rely on for future generations.
Thank you for being an essential part of this journey!
