Inaugural GROW Trip & Gearing Up for Another Year!

A couple of months ago we said farewell to our amazing seniors, wishing them great luck in their future endeavors forging forward and leading the global health movement.

With this farewell we said hello to our new partner AMMID, Asociacion Maya-Mam de Investigacion y Desarollo, in Comitancillo, San Marcos, Guatemala. This summer was our inagural GROW (Grassroots Onsite Work) trip to Comitancillo to better understand the Maya-mam culture, AMMID's work and vision, and to create a strong partnership for our future of solidarity and sustainable global health work.

Four of our members made the trip to Comitancillo and kept a blog while they met with AMMID members, learned about the cultures and traditions, and worked with Ruben to install water filters. You can read about their journey on our GROW blog (https://globemedatcornellgrow.wordpress.com/). Stay updated as our members write reflection posts to talk more in depth about their journey.

While Rie, Jodi, Michelle and Lea were in Comitancillo, they worked on our new MOU with Ruben (our incredible contact at AMMID). This Memorandum of Understanding outlines our project for the 2014-2015 academic year, including a focus on sustainable agriculture and improved cookstoves. The cookstoves will have multiple benefits such as less degredation due to the more efficient burning of wood, which can also lead to health benefits. Fewer emissions also means less contribution to climate change. Another benefit is female empowerment, a major goal of AMMID and GlobeMed's partnership. We are so excited about the coming year!

None of this would be possible without our incredible supporters, and the love and support you continue to give us throughout the years. We are incredible grateful and cannot wait to share our ever-growing partnership with you!

A giant THANK YOU and so, so much GlobeMed love!!!

In Solidarity,

Olivia Winokur, External Co-President
