14 year old Sahiba lives in Sunder Nagar nursery with her parents. Her father is a driver and her mother a cook. Sahiba had always been a shy girl with few friends. She was not very confident of her own abilities and scared of failure and the idea of taking up new things. Her one desire was to play football. But in her communities girls did not play football and so she could never play.
Four years ago, Sahiba joined The YP Foundation’s Life Skills Program. She experienced sessions on health, hygiene, gender and diversity as a participant and slowly became confident enough to support the programme as a community youth leader. She participated in training programmes on governance and the Right to Information and led campaigns on voter awareness and supported members of her community to file applications for formal identity documents and voter registration cards. Last year, she started volunteering to teach the programme where she once participated to other young people and children.
“I have been able to follow my desires and passions after joining YP.
Most of all, she became confident enough to speak with her parents and convince them to allow her to join a football coaching class in the area. She is now the only girl in her community who plays football and wants to inspire other girls to play. She has played many matches and won two prizes as well. The Life Skills and Leadership programme run by The YP Foundation works with children and youth to influence their aspirations and give them the power to reach for their dreams. Your support helps us to ensure girls in the community know they do not have to be bound by their gender. It helps us ensure Sahiba keeps playing and inspires other girls in her community. Thank you for your generous support!
