Supporting 350 Female Detainees in Sierra Leone

During a routine monitoring visit, AdvocAid’s Paralegal met Lima Sesay, a 22-years old student detained at the police station after two days in custody. Lima’s story highlights the importance of timely legal intervention to prevent unjust treatment and ensure fair resolution.

Lima lived with her father and stepmother (the complainant) after her mother moved out due to maltreatment. Following her mother’s departure, the stepmother frequently insulted Lima, leading to ongoing tensions. One day, after the stepmother insulted Lima’s mother, Lima reacted by spraying pepper on face and was subsequently reported to the police, resulting in her arrest and detention.

AdvocAid’s Paralegal reviewed her statement to the police and engaged the father to mediate. Through careful negotiation, the father agreed to secure Lima’s bail, preventing her from being unjustly imprisoned. This intervention allowed the family to settle their issues amicably, with Lima resuming her studies and returning to peace at home.
