AMURT plans to support 300 children and adolescents living with HIV (CALHIV) in Kilifi, Kenya, by ensuring access to ARV drugs, providing school materials and fees, and helping 60 vulnerable households with small business startup support. The project will also help 300 children obtain birth certificates, giving them access to essential services and child protection. Challenge

Children living with HIV (CALHIV) in Kilifi face major challenges, including limited access to life-saving ARV drugs, lack of school fees and materials, and missing birth certificates, which denies them access to essential services, lack of fare to health facilities, poor tracking of viral load suppression and ARV adherence. Many live in poverty, and their caregivers struggle to meet basic needs. Without support, these children risk poor health, dropping out of school, and social exclusion.

Solution

This project will support 300 CALHIV with fare to health facilities to pick ARV drugs. The project will support 12 community health promoters to conduct referrals of the CALHIV to health facilities, track their viral load suppression and ART adherence through household visits. The project will provide school levis and scholastic materials as well as birth certificate fees for the 300 CALHIV. 60 CALHIV households will receive small business startups support to enhance project sustainability.

Long-Term Impact

The project will reduce HIV transmission, improve viral suppression, and reduce incidences of opportunistic infections and deaths amongst CALHIV leading to increased child survival. It will boost school retention, strengthen community health systems as a result of community health promoters' retention and increase CALHIV household incomes as a result of economic support. This will benefit 300 CALHIV and 60 CALHIV households directly and 3600 community members indirectly.
