Children blossom with the help of UPO’s Foster Grandparents. They mentor children who need the most help with social-emotional skills, math, reading, and physical development.

In School Year 2021-22, Washington, DC Public Schools (DCPS) will be returning to in-person classes five days a week for all students. This past year’s virtual learning disproportionally affected students and families of color at elementary schools in Wards 7 and 8. There was a considerable drop in attendance and the early literacy gap widened.

Foster Grandparents, as always, are ready to help teachers and their students. Since there will be an increase in computer-based learning in the classroom to overcome the impact of COVID, our volunteers need to be prepared.

Right now, Foster Grandparents serve 21 of 32 elementary school volunteer worksites in Wards 7 & 8, and these seniors will greatly benefit from intensified training in computer literacy and social-emotional development.

Your continued generous support of the UPO Foster Grandparent Program will help us meet our overall project goal of $20,000 to cover the cost of this training, which will strengthen their impact on achieving the goal of increased academic achievement and closing early literacy and social-emotional development gaps.

Currently 25 Foster Grandparents are fully trained. Our goal is for 75 more to be trained during the next 6 months, thus increasing the number of DC's socio-economically disadvantaged children we serve. Please help us fund their cost of training through the

A new monthly donation of $50 set up during the September 2021 Little by Little Campaign will be eligible for both the immediate Match of 50% PLUS the one-time 100% Match to be received after four monthly payments.

Take advantage of this opportunity to donate $275 to cover the full cost of computer literacy training for a Foster Grandparent (10 x 4 hour sessions)       Your cost $200!

  • Donate $50 during the September 2021 Little by Little Campaign, set it up as a recurring monthly donation, and UPO receives a 50% Match of $25

  • Your $200 donation, made in four easy monthly payments of $50,  become $275

Our Little by Little Campaign Goal is to raise $5,000 over the next 4 months!

Your commitment is vital – let’s train the seniors to help children succeed!
