Support UPO's Foster Grandparents Program

With the help of our projects contribution of the funds we raised with your help during our March 2021 Little by Little Campaign, UPO’s Campaign to provide laptops and support accessories including computer bags and headphones has successfully equipped 52 Foster Grandparents. We are grateful to the Computer Literacy Consultant who provided the training for our volunteers to provide on line mentoring to students. They have also had training on how COVID lock downs have impacted social emotional development of the children they serve and on managing the common behavioral problems resulting from the impact on the education and home life.  This training is essential to their productivity with children one on one and in small groups.

Foster Grandparents have continued to support learning in CARE classrooms. This program is example of our commitment to maximize learning. In small-group classrooms, students have had supervised care for the school day from a Foster Grandparent, a caring adult who is not their teacher. When schools reopen in the spring students will have the benefit of being with their peers at school but will participate in lessons virtually with their teacher and Foster Grandparent mentors on a computer.

Foster Grandparents continue to serve in the Reading Partners remote program which pairs Foster Grandparent remotely with individual students to complete specialized educational activities to enhance reading, comprehension and vocabulary skills. This tailored approach will become increasingly important as students return to the classrooms for assessments on their reading and comprehension. In fact Foster Grandparents will be volunteering in a Reading Partners summer program.

During the next 3 months UPO’s Campaign goal is to raise further funds to provide laptops and support accessories including computer bags and headphones for 50 more Foster Grandparents and also provide them with Computer Literacy training for to provide on line mentoring to students.
