Established in 1965, UPO’s Foster Grandparent Program trains low-income seniors with caring spirits to provide critical mentoring and support to District children in a variety of local settings. The Foster Grandparent Program provides fulfilling volunteer service opportunities for individuals 55 years and older. This program is an opportunity for seniors to give back by sharing their experience and wisdom with children who value and cherish the lessons. This program operates at 48 locations in the District of Columbia and includes early education centers, public and charter schools, before and after-school programs, as well as youth programs. Each year, more than 200 Foster Grandparents put in more than 175,000 volunteer service hours – working one-on-one or in small groups. Foster Grandparents serve where the need is the greatest and because of this, our youth receive tremendous academic benefits alongside life-changing personal development.
United Planning Organization’s 2016 Annual Report was recently distributed. We are proud to share the Foster Grandparents Program Report in the attached PDF, which highlights this quality program’s achievements and outcomes during the past year.
The Program is sponsored by UPO and funded by the Corporation for National & Community Service (CNCS). The funds raised by this project Support UPO's Foster Grandparents Program helps us to cover the cost of training, materials, uniforms, and daily travel for more than 200 low-income DC senior volunteer FGPs. These expenses are not covered by CNCS. In addition we have a waiting list of 100 seniors to be FGPs, 10 educational institutions seeking to join the program and every current partnering volunteer site has requested additional FGPs. The funding we receive from CNCS covers the cost of our current program. Any expansion will have to be funded from private sector fundraising.
We are truly grateful for your past support, but to be honest our fundraising achievement for Support UPO's Foster Grandparents Program on GlobalGiving until a week ago has been disappointing.
This past week we have witnessed a miracle. Five generous gifts from new donors totaling $491 increased our total fundraising to-date by 77% to $1,125 from 18 gifts.
We are soon entering the giving season, Giving Tuesday is early this year on November 28, which is 5 weeks away. Help us get an early start with our year end fundraising by making your own gifts and sharing this Report with as many relatives and friends. Our Foster Grandparents and the kids they serve deserve the support
