“All journalists in Ukraine, I think, know about Internews, because we know that Internews is helping.”
- Oleksandra Novosel, Journalist for Ukrainian Public Broadcast Service
Last month, Internews President and CEO Jeanee Bourgault took the stage at the 2023 Clinton Global Initiative meeting to announce the launch of the Internews Risk and Response Fund. The fund is a $10 million pool of resources that can be deployed with speed when a crisis strikes—a pioneering effort to support journalists and media outlets under existential threat.
When Russia invaded Ukraine, Internews was the first to deliver flak jackets and other safety equipment to journalists in occupied Kherson. We’re building upon the successes of that flexible funding—which started with Ukraine, and has now allowed us to continue providing urgent support in times of crisis, such Sudan, where we were able to provide urgent support to radio stations in Chad to distribute life-saving information for Sudanese refugees.
Internews has been active in Ukraine since 1994. In these unpredictable times, it’s flexible funding from partners like GlobalGiving that allows us to make quick decisions that have the potential to save lives, and we continue to adapt to a changing media landscape to spread lifesaving information—first by ensuring the journalists and newsrooms on the ground are able to carry out their duties safely and responsibly.
For more information, we recommend these local organizations for credible, current information on the latest attacks against media in Ukraine and disinformation about the conflict.
“The question for me was never about staying. It was whether I should continue my work as a journalist, go to the volunteer camps to help people, or join the army. After a few days of the invasion, I knew I had to continue writing and taking photos. I’m in Ukraine, this is our war, and we must cover it. I must show what’s going on. I must stay.”
- Stanislav Kozlyuk, Journalist for the Times of London
