600 Hour of Code events in B&H

By Damir Zekovic | Project Leader

In the period from December 4th till December 10th, 2017, the Global IT Education Week was held. SMART Resource Centre as the official encoder of Hour of Code in Bosnia and Herzegovina responded to this action and animated as many schools and young people as possible to this global movement. As in previous years, the SMART Resource Centre has received approval from all relevant ministries in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and for the first time, even received the approval from the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Government of Republika Srpska. Hour of Code is run by the non-profit organization Code.org from America and the primary goal of this movement is to bring algorithmic way of thinking to children, but also adults who will help them to understand the technology that they use every day, especially students, so they could be interested in choosing their own Careers in It sector.

Specially designed tutorials inspired numerous students across Bosnia and Herzegovina. Thus, over 605 schools and non-governmental organizations from all over Bosnia and Herzegovina participated in the Hour of Code Week. Bosnia and Herzegovina has achieved the best results this year in the region again. The next is Croatia with 297 registered schools and organizations, followed by Serbia with 122 applications, Macedonia 27 and Slovenia.

This year SMART Resource Center has organized hours of code in 5 different locations. The first two days of Hours of code were organized in the Smart Resource Center where 6 primary schools with 88 students participated. Primary school students then had the opportunity to visit HUB387 and see some of the leading IT companies in the industry.

The next three days of Hour of code were parallel held in ITAcademy premises in Sarajevo and in Banja Luka. In Banja Luka 7 high schools participated with 109 students and students.ITAcademy reward the most active student with a free HTML and CSS course.

The SMART Resource Center participated for the first time at the Youth Education Fair and had the opportunity to present its activity to students and teachers who visited the Education Fair.

The most important event of Hour of Code were held in the premises of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Sarajevo where 84th students were distributed in 5 IT labs. Students had the opportunity to code with IT experts.

281 students passed through the Hour of code under the SMART Resource Center, which makes us very proud!

This project has shown that one small idea in our colaboration can make a big thing, and achieve great results - even the best in the region!

The following activities related to Hour of Code are the rewarding of schools and organizations who participated in project.

Stay tuned!
